Nightmare abbey is an 1818 novella by thomas love peacock and his third long work of fiction to be published it was written in late march and june 1818 and published in london in november of the same year by t hookham jr of old bond street and baldwin craddock joy of paternoster row. Nightmare abbey was written in 1818 by thomas love peacock it is a gothic satire which delights in parodying the current fashions of the time such as the romantic movement in literature and transcendental philosophy. The great pleasure of nightmare abbey which was inspired by thomas love peacocks friendship with shelley lies in the delight the author takes in poking fun at the romantic movement. The road which connected nightmare abbey with the civilised world was artificially raised above the level of the fens and ran through them in a straight line as far as the eye could reach with a ditch on each side of which the water was rendered invisible by the aquatic vegetation that covered the surface
